What a Month It’s Been!

It’s been 4 weeks since COVID-19 was named a pandemic, and while so much has changed in the world around us since then, the needs of the animals in our care has remained the same. As I write this, we’re currently caring for 23 cats and 7 dogs in the shelter, and actively seeking to find them all homes.

As you may know, we switched to “by appointment only” on March 21 and since then, our adoptions have been consistently good (we’ve adopted out 12 cats and dogs during that time period) and the use of our Lucy Mackenzie Pet Pantry has skyrocketed. While we’ve always had high standards for cleaning and disinfecting daily around the shelter, we’ve adapted heeding the advice and guidelines set forth by the CDC, state and federal government in our efforts to keep our staff and their families, community and animals as safe as possible.

We cancelled our March and April spay and neuter clinics. Additionally, we’ve postponed all dog training classes. We’re hopeful that we will be able to resume both of these programs in May; In addition to providing these services to the community, they are also sources of income for the shelter.
We made the difficult decision to cancel two of our largest fundraising events of the year – our April 4th Cabin Fever Italian Supper and our June 4th Paws for the Cause Auction and Dinner. We’re currently working on creating a virtual event to bring to you on June 4 – stay tuned for details!

As always, our staff has been absolutely awesome! I’d like to thank them for their continued dedication, humor and compassion – not only to the animals, but also to the people in our community that need us right now. Our job isn’t easy – it’s physically demanding and mentally draining. At the same time, it’s hands down one of the most gratifying jobs out there. We’re here to serve, and through this pandemic, we remain here to serve our community.

If you have any questions about our response, operations or anything else, I encourage you to contact me directly at 802-484-5829 or at jstanley@lucymac.org.

I thank you for being a supporter of Lucy Mackenzie Humane Society, and wish you and yours much health and all my best.

Sincerely,
Jackie Stanley
Executive Director
