Help Today

On Thursday, November 13, Lucy Mackenzie Humane Society worked with the Woodstock Police Department to seize 23 Arabian horses from a farm in Woodstock on suspicion of animal cruelty.  These horses have now been relocated to the Green Mountain Horse Association, in South Woodstock, and we’re currently in the process of drawing upon the support of volunteers to provide care for the horses, as well as seeking donations to further help meet their needs.

In the days and weeks ahead, this need will only become greater.  Whether you make a donation, or are a direct care volunteer helping with mucking out the stalls, feeding, walking or grooming the horses, no contribution is too big or too small.

There are many ways in which you can help:

1.  Make a donation today.  The cost to provide care for 23 horses is enormous!  Every cent count.  Click here to make a donation now or mail your check to Lucy Mackenzie Humane Society, PO Box 702, Brownsville, VT 05037.  Please indicate “Horses” on your donation if it’s intended to go directly to the care of these horses.

2.  Sign up to volunteer and pick-up a shift or two.  We need help around the clock to work with the herd. Not a horse person?  No problem!  We need your help, too, more than ever at our West Windsor shelter taking care of our cats and dogs. Many opportunities exist.  Please contact Jackie at jstanley@lucymac.org or 802-484-LUCY to learn more.

3.  Donate any of the following items:

  • First-Cut Hay
  • Shavings
  • Alfalfa Hay
  • Sentinel Senior Grain

If you’d like to donate any of these items, or any other items that could be of use,  please contact us for details.

As you can imagine, it is quite the mammoth undertaking to help provide the care and support these horses so richly deserve, and any help we can receive at this time would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you all for your efforts. I wish I still lived in the area & was able to be a direct care volunteer. If the opportunity to adopt comes up, please let me know. I hope all of these horses find their forever homes.

Where are you located and have you considered sending some to other facilities?

Hi Stephanie, Lucy Mackenzie Humane Society is located in West Windsor, VT and the horses are being sheltered at a facility approx. 8 miles away. We’re actually quite pleased that we were able to keep the herd together through this transition for their well-being.

just donated 100 dollars via paypal no where to indicate it is for the horses… I am a marketing professional and horse person I am going to push your need to a variety of groups and social media … but it would be great if you can make it obvious that the donation is for the horses

Hi my name is Megan and I have recently seen a video on Facebook about the 23 horses. If you are in need of a loving home or a foster home for a horse I might be interested. I have been into and around horses for my whole life. I love to trail ride and hack around with my other horse friends. I live in Gilmanton New Hampshire on a 150 acre farm. My mom has three other horses.
I am pretty tall, so if you have a taller horse that would be great! 🙂 let me know! I’ll try and donate a bag of grain sometime soon.

I live in the area and I was able to be a volunteer yesterday directly with the horses. We mucked stalls, feed, unloaded a hay trailer and walked some horses. They have so much spirit and love in their eyes and this experience was life changing. I will be back again to volunteer and I will be making a donation.

      Hi Alani,
Whether or not these horses will be put up for adoption is still unknown, as they are part of an ongoing trial. Please stay posted for more information.

I am a volunteer for Bay State Equine Rescue in Oakham, MA and find this such a tragedy. It never ceases to amaze me how horrible humans can be to these majestic animals. Please know we are thinking of you. I have sent a $100 donation just now via Paypal. Please be sure to use it for what ever is needed for these horses. I wish you and the horses a safe holiday season.

Hi – I just made a donation via pay pal and I too was not able to specify it is for the horses. Having three of my own rescue senior horses I know what a job it is!

I was wondering if you are aware of the True Blue Club? It is from Blue Seal and when you save the UPCs from the Sentinel bags and send them in, they give you coupons for discounts on future purchases. Every little bit helps!

I am too far away to volunteer, but am going to send a donation. I would be interested in adopting, and might even consider being a foster home. Are they trained or will they need to be pasture buddies. Thank you.
